MILLENNIUN
The Democracy Development Centre ALTER since the end of the last century has been contributing to more democratic, more opened Macedonia with bigger freedom and open-mindedness! A group of journalists was formally registered as an NGO on 8 October 2000. Since then we have created over 200 video shows which are related to the rights of the ‘less equal’ in the Macedonian society of… the equal. We have been writing and making videos about people with special needs, women and children, underprivileged men, the LGBT community, Romani, youth, inter-ethnic ties and living with diversities... We have been cooperating with similar and better than us in Albania, Bulgaria, Germany, Romania, Serbia and Hungary. We have worked alongside UNDP, FOS Macedonia, SOZM, the Stability Pact and we were mainly supported by the German Ministry for Economic Development and cooperation through the Foreign Relations Institute. We spent the first decade of the new millennium dealing with the crisis in our country. The inter-ethnic ties and poverty remain as problems and we will continue dealing with them. However, now in the second decade of the 21st century we will expand our reach. Our mission will include, in addition to media, the cultural institutions in the country. In addition to the capital, where the main focus of event is, we will try to place the focus on smaller towns. We will try to bring the world closer to them and bring them closer to the world. Democracy is a goal and to achieve the goal all means are allowed!
The main goal of ALTER is to offer an ALTERnative. By offering different services, we give people the opportunity to realize that Macedonia is full of diversities, which have to be recognized and respected. We need to learn from our differences in order to become better people. The approach for realizing this goal is suitable – via video productions, organizing events, debates, seminars, workshops and international cooperation.
Our portfolio in terms of videos comprises over 200-hour 30-minute video programs and numerous short videos created as our own final product or in co-production with people or institutions from Albania, Bulgaria, Germany, Romania, Serbia and Hungary. We have worked alongside UNDP, FOS Macedonia, SOZM, the Stability Pact and we were mainly supported by the German Ministry for Economic Development and cooperation through the Foreign Relations Institute. In terms of organising events our cooperation is mainly carried out with UNDP in the country as well as various projects supported by the EU, UNDP and USAID...
